Simulation Exercise: Rift Valley Fever in Portugal

11 November 2021

Dr Susana Guedes Pombo, OIE Delegate and Director General of the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary Services of Portugal (DGAV), informed the OIE that an online simulation exercise dedicated to Rift Valley Fever (RVF) called Simex_RVF PT 2021, would take place on 11th November, with the collaboration of the European Commission for the Control of Foot and Mouth Disease (EuFMD).

The main objective of this exercise is to test the functionality of the contingency plan of RFV. This exercise is also important to assess the capacity to deploy communication between entities, to train technical aspects such as conducting epidemiological surveys, analysing geographic data on affected populations, and identifying the appropriate response measures for each situation.

The exercise will involve central and regional veterinary services (DGAV), regional Public Health Services, Administração Regional de Saúde do Centro I.P. (ARS Centro), the national reference laboratory, Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária I.P (INIAV I.P.), experts from the Center for the Study of Vector and Infectious Diseases (CEVDI-INSA) and from University, the Portuguese Army, and private veterinarians from the Livestock Producer Organizations (OPP).
