Forecasting the Fallout from AMR: Economic Impacts of Antimicrobial Resistance in Food-Producing Animals

26/09/2024

This study’s key objective is to generate evidence on the economic burden of AMR in food-animal production to inform responses and decision-making that support the implementation of NAPs. Accurate estimates of the economic burden depend on high-quality relevant data. However, a major challenge is the limited data available in the animal sector, as well as inadequate financial support for the sustainable implementation of NAPs on AMR for most countries, particularly LMICs. While a few existing studies have considered the economic impact of AMR on livestock production, they did not consider the underlying pathways on how changes in AMU and AMR impact these sectors.
