Gaps and lack of clarity in wildlife disease reporting are noticeable for diseases and species that are not mentioned in WOAH’s Lists and Codes, whilst the need for a complete, timely and transparent picture of the circulation of pathogens and other health threats in nature is crucial for conservation of biodiversity, and early warning on threats potentially affecting human, wild and domestic animal health.
It was highlighted that there is an urgent need to develop a coordinated global long-term strategy to optimise disease reporting in wild species, based on a robust scoping exercise of the goal and purpose for reporting diseases in wildlife.
