Simulation exercise: Foot and mouth disease in Brazil-17

23 to 27 November

Dr Geraldo Marcos De Moraes, Director of the Department of Animal Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply of Brazil, informed the OIE that a virtual table-top simulation exercise (Digital /Web based) on a foot and mouth disease (FMD) emergency will take place from 23 to 27 November 2020. It will include the participation of 160 veterinarians from the Official Federal and State Veterinary Services from all over the country, from entities of the private sector of the State of Santa Catarina, the Federal Agricultural and Livestock Laboratory of Minas Gerais and the Pan American Food and Mouth Disease Center (Panaftosa). The event will benefit from the collaboration of the OIE Regional Representation for the Americas as well as the OIE Preparedness and Resilience Department.

The objective of this table-top exercise is to carry out a theoretical review on the guidelines of the National Foot and Mouth Disease Contingency Plan when facing an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in a State within a FMD free zone where vaccination is not practised, including:

a)    the epidemiology of foot and mouth disease;

b)    the procedures for investigation, diagnosis, containment and eradication; as well as

c)    the structures, roles and responsibilities for the response to an animal health emergency.

This is the first stage of a training whose practical exercise in the field will be carried out in the State of Santa Catarina, in 2021.
