Simulation exercise: Vesicular diseases in Brazil

Dr Geraldo Marcos de Moraes, Delegate to WOAH and Director of the Department of Animal Health at the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA), informed WOAH that a local theoretical and practical simulation exercise will be conducted in Ponta Porã, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, from 15 to 19 August 2022. It will investigate suspected vesicular diseases reported to the official Veterinary Service.
The simulation exercise is organised by the State Agency for Animal and Plant Health Protection of Mato Grosso do Sul (IAGRO), with the participation of MAPA and the Pan-American Foot and Mouth Disease Centre (Panaftosa). It aims to practice and test the capacity of the official Veterinary Service to investigate suspected vesicular diseases, following the guidelines of the Manual for the Investigation of Vesicular Disease.
The exercise will promote theoretical review and practical training on clinical and epidemiological investigation, sample collection and submission to the laboratory, foot and mouth disease diagnosis, screening procedures, biosecurity and spread control, information system and communication flow, and discussion and evaluation of strategies and methods to contain the spread of foot and mouth disease.
